The Piper Colt Project

Piper PA-22-108 Colt

The Piper Colt had been sitting in a family barn for over 10 years.  It was purchased with the intention of being a family project under the tutelage of their father/grandfather.  Unfortunately, this project was never realized, and several years after his passing Michele Heins (his daughter) felt it was time for the aircraft to be donated into an organization which would have a positive effect on the lives of youth.  Ms. Heins reached out to Build A Plane, and the Piper colt was placed on a list of possible aircrafts to be donated.

October 20, 2017 Flight Expo, Inc. was made aware of a Piper Colt that was being donated in to the National Build A Plane program, and traveled to Mt. Vernon, Ohio in November to pick up the aircraft. Once received in, the aircraft was completely disassembled, the engine removed, and the wings and fuselage fabric removed.

New parts have been installed in the wings, tail surfaces, and fuselage.  All of the components have been sanded down and checked for corrosion.  These areas have been primed, the wings and tail surfaces have been recovered with fabric, and the rib stitched, ready to be primed and painted. The fuselage has the instrument panel re-installed, as well as re-installed wiring and foot pedals. We should see fabric covering by the end of July 2020.

This has been a two-year project for Flight Expo, Inc.’s Build A Plane program with the hopes that we will have the aircraft test flown by September 1, 2020.
